231: My Prophecy is Better Than Yours

Jeremiah 26-29
"Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, 'Listen, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, yet you have persuaded this nation to trust in lies. Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This very year you are going to die, because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.' ' " - Jeremiah 28:15-16

[Sorry the blog is late, I've been swamped]

In chapter 26 Jeremiah prophecies against the Israelites one too many times. They finally say that Jeremiah is a false prophet and should be put to death. Eventually some of the more level headed elders convince the others that prophets have said negative things before and they weren't killed.

In chapter 27, God tells the Israelites to serve the king of Babylon. He tells the kings of Israel not to listen to the prophets that say Israel is not to serve Babylon. Of course, the kings are hearing not to listen to prophets from a prophet. I'm not sure how they know that Jeremiah is any better than the other people who talk to God.

Chapter 28 is interesting. Another prophet (Hananiah) says that God told him that within two years Israel will be free of Babylon. Jeremiah thinks otherwise and tells Hananiah that God told him Nebuchadnezzar (the king of Babylon) would have control over everything, even wild animals. Who are the leaders of Israel supposed to trust in this situation? Both people say that God is telling them to say something. At the end of the chapter Hananiah dies. Well that's a comprehensive solution, wait till one of the prophets dies and the one that's still alive is the correct one.

In the final chapter for today, God just repeats his promise to bring the Israelites back to Israel in 70 years. Thanks God, the entire generation will probably be dead by then. God also says to settle down in their new homes away from Israel. Sounds like a great idea. Once they're settled in their new homes you can drag them back to Israel.

Is it right to spank your kids? Ray Spendley says yes, because the bible says so.

He first quotes Proverbs 13:24 "He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him." Of course beating your child senseless is the right thing to do, God says so. Modern psychological sciences don't know what they're talking about. Emotional damage from having an authority figure beat you? No way.

This is my favorite quote:
As late as the 1960s, children did not carry guns to school and kill students and teachers as they have in recent decades. Even parents have been killed for not doing what their children wanted them to do.
Right, there were no murders in the 1960's because people beat their children properly. Oh wait, there were still murders in the 1960's. How many children are killing their parents for not getting their way?
Because of recent laws, children not only defy their parents, they flaunt their hatred of all authority. Parents can be jailed if they are considered to have abused their children in any manner, and a young person who kills is not judged as an adult because of laws passed by legislators who have no more common sense than those adolescents.
Those ridiculous child abuse laws. Parents should obviously be able to do whatever they want with their children as long as it's in the name of discipline. Twenty lashings, two weeks without food, and a good soap mouth washing should do the trick. And obviously an 8 year old that accidentally fires a gun, killing someone, should be jailed for manslaughter and have their childhood taken away. I'm glad this guy isn't making the laws.

He, of course, ends with a quote from Exodus, “And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.” I certainly hope Ray doesn't have kids.

  1. So Ray Spendley is actually advocating that children should be put to death for cursing at their parents? It's hard to see how he could be arguing otherwise.

But if he did, it would just be another example of a Xian helping to rid humanity a little bit of his own stupid genes.
